The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary

Publisher: SoftKey International, Inc.
Platform: Windows - DOS
Genre: Educational
My Rating:
Release: Jan 1992
Summary: Seeing the carnival in the distance, you were interested and decided to stop near Troggle Shoot. The owner of it, Dr. Quandary, proposed you to shoot at selected targets and to win a one of three dolls. In any case, either you won or did not, Dr. Quandary awarded you with one of the dolls based on your choice. But a victory only looks like a victory; your mind will be put in the doll's body and will be sent to the mysterious island, where the main gameplay begins.

As a doll, you'll wake up at the beach, where the bottle from the sea arrives. Reading the message from the bottle and the letter from near post stand, you're informed that you should collect certain items and brew them in a magical cauldron to prepare Fixer Elixir. Drinking it, you will return to your real form in the real world. Items will be given to you, when you complete certain puzzle or challenges. The puzzles are remakes of classic ones and vary from musical sequence repeating to Tangram and Tower of Hanoi. Different inhabitants of the secret island interact with you as well as the image of Dr. Quandary himself keeps an eye on you.

Three dolls represent the difficulty levels, which are kept in their names: B. Ginner (beginner), O.D. Nary (ordinary), D. Feecult (difficult). Difficulty is increased by the number of items in the puzzles, challenges, etc.

Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Price of Loyalty

Publisher: The 3DO Company
Platform: Windows - DOS
Genre: Strategy, Role-Playing
Rated: Kids to Adults
My Rating:
Release: Oct 1996
Summary: Heroes of Might and Magic II is a fantasy turn-based strategy game that takes place in the land of Enroth, a place of magic. There is a multitude of creature types, from griffins to rocs, golems to pikemen, unicorns to hydras, and four different dragons. Each castle type has six different creatures, from the weak to the strong. There are six castle types, each corresponding to a hero class: Knight, Sorceress, Wizard (Good side), Barbarian, Necromancer, and Warlock (Evil side). There are also six different types of neutral creatures you can recruit in special structures scattered about the maps.

Compared to the first game, this sequel has larger and more interactive combat screens. The spell system is now based on spell points instead of spell memorization.

The maps themselves range from small two-player maps to huge maps that all six player types could fit in easily. There is a map maker included, and you can multiplay via hot-seat, modem, or IP.

An expansion pack, The Price of Loyalty, was released in 1997. Later, 3DO bundled Heroes II and its expansion pack in one box, released as Heroes of Might and Magic II Gold 1998.

Heroes II added the Necromancer and Wizard factions, joining the Knight, Barbarian, Sorceress, and Warlock from the first game.

Heroes II introduced several new features that have since become standard for the series. First among them is the ability for heroes to gain special abilities. Each hero can possess up to eight different secondary skills out of fourteen available. Once gained, a skill can be developed from Basic to Advanced and Expert levels. For example, the Wisdom skill allows a hero to learn spells of level 3 and higher, while the Logistics skill increases the hero's movement ability over land. In Heroes I, heroes had a single fixed special ability according to their class.

The magic system was changed in Heroes II. Heroes I had used a memorization system in which each spell could be cast a certain number of times before being exhausted. Heroes II uses a magic point system that allows the player to apportion spell use as needed, while the varying point cost of different spells maintains balance. Another major feature introduced in Heroes II is the ability to upgrade units, granting them improved statistics and, in some cases, important abilities. For example, upgrading Vampires to Vampire Lords enables them to absorb health and even to resurrect units.

Independence Day

Publisher: Fox Interactive Media
Platform: Windows - DOS
Genre: Action, Flight, Sci Fi, Shooter
Rated: K-A
My Rating:
Release: Feb 1997
Summary: This arcade game is based loosely on the 1996 blockbuster movie "Independence Day." Interspersed with cutscenes lifted from the film, the game consists of flying a jet through various missions in order to take down the gargantuan, city-destroying spaceships. This entails flying around the 3D level and taking out targets such as: communication uplinks, shield generators, the occasional alien fighter craft, and ultimately bringing down the major alien ship via a strike on its main cannon. Powerups are plentiful, such as medical packs that heal your jetcraft, bonus weapons, bonus planes, and an item that freezes enemy planes for a brief time.

Mission settings include the Grand Canyon, Washington D.C., and New York City. There are other missions that are provided on a need-to-know basis (as stated in the manual). The game also features 2-player head-to-head action via a network or null modem link.

Leisure Suit Larry 1: The Land of the Lounge Lizards

Publisher: Sierra On-Line, Inc.
Platform: Windows - DOS
Genre: Adventure
Rated: Mature
My Rating:
Release: Jul 1991
Summary: Meet Larry. He's just turned 40, and he's still single. If you can get past the glow of his Grecian formula, you can see his hairline beginning to make a hasty retreat from his forehead. Larry's leisure suit is of the highest quality (100% manmade material, permanent press, too!) He wars at least 11 gold chains and his freshly-capped teeth could blind you in a bright light!

Down at the singles bar he tells the chicks, "Sure, I'm single... I got in a fight with my ol' lady and she threw me out." He doesn't tell them the "ol' lady" was his mom, or that he was 38 at the time!

Cyber Empires

Publisher: Strategic Simulations, Inc.
Platform: Windows - DOS
Genre: Action, Strategy
My Rating:
Release: Mar 1992
Summary: Predecessor to the highly successful (and more complex) Fantasy Empires. A tactical and strategic turn-based game of robotic combat, land conquest, and city siege.

Better known as Steel Empire in Europe, which sold better than its US incarnation, Cyber Empire is a fun sci-fi strategy game that combines furious tactical combat and grand strategic planning into a highly enjoyable game.

In a nice twist to standard conquer-the-universe gameplay, Cyber Empire eschews the tedious micromanagement commonly found in other games, and focus instead on fun, action-oriented ship-to-ship combat, ship design, and fast pace. Master of Orion this ain't, but it is nonetheless striking its own territory with attractive graphics and high playability.

3-D Ultra Pinball

Publisher: Sierra On-Line, Inc.
Platform: Windows - DOS
Genre: Action
Rated: Everyone
My Rating:
Release: Jan 1995
Summary: Some would call it Impossible Pinball. Not that it is difficult to play, rather that you could never build a pinball machine that could do the type of things that this game does. But it seems as though that's the point. As like any pinball game, there is an underlying plot in which you must achieve certain goals on each of the three pinball tables (you can warp between them).

This takes you off into the fantasy pinball world, where anything can happen. Tanks can attack your ball, comets can fly in and create a crater in the middle of the board. Who knows what will happen next.

Publisher: Gathering of Developers, Inc.
Platform: Windows - DOS
Genre: Strategy
Rated: Everyone
My Rating:

Comments: MAC Version
Summary: This is one of the many repackagings of the original Railroad Tycoon 2 game. This one comes with 3 scenarios from the full RT2 game. ("The Iron Seed", "Excess on the Orient Express", and "Cape to Cairo")

Thankfully, all other elements are present from the full game, including the stock market, opponents, sandbox mode, (which makes up a lot for only having 3 scenarios) and building.
