Macross: The Super Dimension Fortress

Publisher: Bandai
Platform: PlayStation 2
Genre: Action, Flight Simulator, Shooter
Rated: Everyone
My Rating:
Release: Oct 2003
Summary: Macross: The Super Dimension Fortress Japanese Format (NTSC-J). Box,package.
In the game players play through the events of either the television animated series or the movie. In the longer yet less difficult TV series version of events, players take the pilot role of Skull Seven (スカル7番機 Sukaru Nanabanki) who is then promoted to command of the Purple Team as Purple Leader. In the shorter yet more difficult movie route, the character is referred to as Skull Seven (スカル・セブン Sukaru Sebun) and later on as Apollo Leader.
In both versions, the player's wingmen are two original characters named Eddie Juutilainen and Bruce Rudel. In addition, another original character called Emma Granger acts as the team's tactical officer from aboard the bridge of the SDF-1 Macross. Her name is a nameplay on actress Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame and her character's name from that movie series, Hermione Granger.
The player's character in the game is unnamed. This character never utters a word and his face is never seen during any of both the TV and movie paths of the entire game.
Other differences between routes include the armament of the VF-1 Valkyrie variable fighters (the later upgrades used in the movie route are more well equipped), boss fights (the only constant is a duel with Milia, a Zentradi/Meltrandi ace pilot), and the song that pop idol Lynn Minmay sings during the final battle.
In the course of the game, players will occasionally encounter characters from the series, such as receiving briefings from Roy Focker or duelling with Quamzin Kravshera.

Simple 2000 Series Vol. 61: The Oneechanbara

Publisher: D3 Publisher, Inc.

Genre: Action
Rated: Cero Z
My Rating:
Summary: Sexy & Stylish & Grotesque

Zombies, zombies, and zombies attacking. An exhilarating and pleasant grotesque action where you jump into a horde of zombies and slash them. Slash away the flying arms, neck, torso, and the zombie hordes that are still approaching. It is dyed vermillion by being bathed in the splashing blood.

Bizarre Exhilarating Horror Swordsmanship Action

While making full use of various attack techniques and items, advance while kicking enemy zombies. The stage will be cleared by defeating the enemy boss zombie of each stage. By gaining experience points and leveling up, you can increase each ability. Maybe more costumes?

Attack in a Bloody Rampage!

Every time you attack an enemy zombie, you will be bathed in return blood and the return blood gauge will rise. When the return blood parameter reaches MAX, the player enters a runaway state, and the attack power, movement speed, and attack range increase significantly. Zako zombies can all be defeated in one shot. However, since your physical strength gradually decreases during a rampage, skillfully using this rampage state according to the situation of the enemy zombies is the key to winning the game.

Zombies that attack even without necks and arms. They attack with just their legs.

A heroine dyed red with blood. Fight red and beautifully!

A huge boss appears in each stage! Slash in a runaway state!

Oni

Publisher: Rockstar Games, Inc.
Platform: PlayStation 2
Genre: Action
Rated: Teen
My Rating:
Release: Jan 2001
Summary: Although it's somewhat rough around the edges, "Oni" is an innovative third-person action-adventure title that won't disappoint hard-core gamers. Set in the cyberpunk future of 2032, the Japanese anime-influenced "Oni" casts players as Konoko, a spunky government agent on a mission to bust up a criminal organization known as the Syndicate.
While the game's free-roaming 3-D environments may not be much to look at--they're understated to the point of seeming bland or unfinished--"Oni"'s real beauty is in its mix of hand-to-hand and weapons-based combat. The game's characters have their own distinct fighting moves and can disarm their opponents, making the arsenal of available weapons fair game. Admittedly, the controls (which utilize everything but the L3 button) are quite a handful and take a lot of getting used to, but the payoff is quite a kick.
Those who are easily frustrated should be warned that the action in "Oni" is fast and furious, and it's easy to get killed again and again at times--with each death followed by an annoyingly slow reload time. This is especially true when fighting multiple opponents who have the advantage of not being distracted by disorienting camera angles. "--Joe Hon"
Pros: Fast-and-furious mix of hand-to-hand and weapons-based combat Silky smooth character animations; stylized, effective onscreen displays New special moves are "learned" as the game progresses Japanese anime-influenced cyberpunk story line Cons: Understated 3-D environments Not for those easily frustrated by complex controls

Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo

Publisher: Bandai America, Inc.
Platform: PlayStation 2
Genre: Action
Rated: Teen
My Rating:
Release: Aug 2001
Summary: Followers of the enormous Tokyo pop franchise that is Gundam will probably get their kicks from its first appearance on the PS2. However, the game's many bad design issues will keep this giant robot blaster from moving its appeal from cult phenom status to mainstream hit.
The action takes place during Gundam's famous One Year War. For Gundam neophytes, there's plenty of cinemas and background info to help get you up to speed. Sadly, controlling your top-of-the-line mech is frustrating because of clumsy controls. While it's easy to pound stationary targets, mobile enemies are disturbingly hard to keep targeted. Also, hand-to-hand combat is both boring and cumbersome.
The graphics, while not spectacular (the explosion effects are cool), do a decent job of rendering large battlefields, and the mechs look similar to their toy counterparts. The full-motion video cutscenes are nice enough to keep die-hards playing, if only to see how the story moves along.
For Gundam fanatics, "Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo" is a decent time waster that lets you live the war you already love. For everyone else, though, this is a mediocre blaster that shows us that the definitive mech game has yet to arrive on the PS2. "--Mark Brooks"
Pros: Gundam finally comes to the PS2 Decent graphics deliver the look of the cartoons and toys Plenty of background info and short cutscenes for initiating newbies to the Gundam universe Cons: Painfully frustrating, complex, and inaccurate controls Hand-to-hand mech combat is bland and slow

Fight to save NYC as Shinjiro Taiga. View larger. Story New York City has always been the focal point of the American experiment. Since colonial times it has served as a melting pot, but recently more than just the "huddled masses yearning to breath free" have established a foothold in the Big Apple. Along with peoples and influences from all over the world it has also accumulated masses of relics and artifacts not meant to exist in proximity to each other, resulting in malignant energies from the past. But New Yorkers are not alone in the coming struggle. The Star Division has long battled such forces around the world, and now they have come to the New World. Officially titled the New York Combat Revue, Star Division, this diverse group of covert operatives uses their front as an all female troupe of Broadway performers headquartered at the Littlelip Theater as a front to protect the people of the city. The latest member to join the team from the Tokyo branch is Shinjiro Taiga. Being a young man, he is not quite what the other members of Stars Division expected and as such must prove himself, but filled with hopes and dreams he is determined to fight for justice. To be successful he will have to build relationships within his new team and learn to fight with them. Gameplay "Sakura Wars: So Long My Love" is a strategy RPG. Gameplay is split between two modes: Adventure Mode and Battle Mode. In Adventure Mode Shinjiro explores the Littlelip Theater and greater New York City, interacting with other members of the Star Division and various other characters in a variety of ways, including timed and untimed dialog and action selections and on-screen manipulations using controller analog sticks. In addition, players take part in events such as Broadway shows. Depending on your interactions with team members, their "Trust" in you will change. If this change is positive the player will form "Bonds" with the respective team member, which will affect skills, abilities and possibilities in battle. Battle Mode features a strategic real-time RPG battle system in which players control up to six team members in ground and aerial combat with the goal of destroying enemies. Ground combat takes place using mechanized suits referred to as STARS (Super Telekinetic Assault Robots). Every STARS unit in the game can transform from a battle mech into a jet fighter during combat, depending on the situation. Once transformed, weapons and movement methods will change accordingly. For example, the hero’s ground mode utilizes a sword as his main weapon, but in jet mode he will use long-range missiles. In coordinating attacks with team members players can adopt differing strategies which utilize fluctuating amounts of mobility, hit points and healing abilities. Each character also has access to unique Super Attacks that can be unleashed. Focused joint attacks can also be enacted by two or more characters which have built sufficient bonds between them in Adventure Mode. Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht

Publisher: Namco Limited
Platform: PlayStation 2
Genre: Role-Playing (RPG)
Rated: Teen
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (234 votes)
Release: Feb 2003
Summary: The ambitiously named "Xenosaga: Episode 1--Der Wille zer Macht" is an epic-sized space opera that opens in the outer reaches of the galaxy. The story follows several space-dwelling citizens as they aim to unlock the secrets of the universe. The specifics of those secrets presumably will be revealed over subsequent editions of the Xenosaga series (after all, this is only "Episode 1")--but a vital clue is held in the elusive Zohar, a mysterious artifact that is aggressively sought by evil aliens. Without spoiling the plot's surprising twists, let's just say the game's German subtitle "Der Wille zur Macht" (translated as "The Will to Power") is a less-than-subtle ode to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who is considered as one of the precursors of existentialism.
Like many conventional RPG titles, "Xenosaga"'s gameplay balances between exploration and battle modes. The game designers have thankfully spared players from any ill-conceived random battle sequences. Instead, you can concentrate directly on your quest without the repetitious enemy battles.
The designers also did a good job balancing a traditional RPG structure with complex themes. However, the game seems to go out of its way to casually integrate controversial (and frankly creepy) religious imagery into the context of the game. Some may find the game offensive and disturbing; others will likely find it intellectually stimulating.
Namco promises about 80 hours of gaming--but a good portion of that is non-interactive full-motion video. While the stretched-out cutscenes do add considerable depth to the characters, they're often poorly paced and too long--one takes an alarming 30 minutes to unfold! The addition of more background music might have helped to pick up the pacing, since the obligatory soundtrack is strangely absent at some critical plot points.
With impressive animation and unexpected plot points, "Xenosaga: Episode 1--Der Wille zer Macht" is easily one of the more enjoyable RPG titles to hit the PS2. While this isn't for the happy-go-lucky gaming crowd (see "Kingdom Hearts"), adult-minded gamers will likely be consumed by the darkness and devious delights offered within this twisted title. "--Brett Atwood"
Pros: Complex characters and story themes No random battle sequences Impressive 3-D animation Cons: Long, long, looooooooong cut scenes

"Dive" into a Reyvateil's Cosmosphere for conversations that drive detailed storylines. View larger. The Legend of Metafalica: Story Behind the Struggle Set on the same planet as the first AR Tonelico, this game focuses on the region of Metafalss at the top of a tall, narrow tower. Inhabited by refugees, this artificially created land can't sustain the crops people need to survive, but the legend of Metafalica offers a faint glimmer of hope. It is said that, long ago, whenever a Holy Maiden sang a special hymn called Metafalica it produced a utopia filled with fertile land, and this myth gives people aspiration.
Efforts to create this type of world are denied again and again by the ruling Goddess, creating an atmosphere of hopelessness and desperation, and a new government called the Grand Bell rises to power promising to create a utopia without the Goddess' help. As a player in the unfolding drama, you'll have to decide between living with the Goddess or rebelling against her. The realism of your chosen character's plight is enhanced by the experience of moving through the city of Pastalia and navigating ruins on an SD graphics screen.
The Song Magic Battle System Has Evolved
The song battles from the first game are improved upon -- the two-part battles in this game again focus on vanguards protecting Reyvateil maidens and the song magic unleashed by those maidens. Divided into an "attack" segment and a "defend" segment, battle centers around timing, harmonics, and synchronization between your Reyvateils. As you advance in the game, the things you learn and enemies you conquer add additional capabilities to your arsenal. Pairings between characters that have created strong individual bonds put even more power at your disposal, bringing the events that occur in between struggles into the fray and adding strategic interest.
Object Crafting and the Cosmosphere
Between battles, you'll stay busy interacting with shop keepers, moving around the region, exploring the maidens' object crafting capabilities, and "Diving" into psychological realms, where you can explore a Reyvateil's "Cosmosphere," uncovering her emotions and spiritual power. Unlike in the previous version, interactions in the Cosmosphere have effects in the real world. You can even date other characters, impacting the evolving social networks of Metafalss. The intricate conversations that occur, the wide range of character interactions, and the unique magic behind the harmonics of song battle give this game a rich, innovative texture.

Megami Tensei was originally based on the novel series Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani. A major franchise in the RPG genre, MegaTen games take place in the contemporary or near-future Japan, mixing occult and cyberpunk elements. The games feature mythological references from multiple mythologies, and the player is often asked to make moral or philosophical choices that affect the game's storyline and ending.
The silent male protagonist who represents the player in Persona 4 attends Yasogami High School with Chie, Yosuke, and Yukiko. His entire personality and name is decided and portrayed by the player's in-game actions and decisions. He wields two-handed sword type weapons, but unlike Persona 3, he doesn't use alternative weapons.
Mysterious Murders Abound
Persona 4 takes place in a rural town named Inaba where mysterious murders occur whenever there is fog after heavy rain. The town has a television channel that airs only at midnight called Mayonaka TV, during which it is said that one can see their "other half" while staring at the screen. After hearing about a recent unsolved murder, some characters realize that they had witnessed the murder victim while watching Mayonaka TV.
The protagonist discovers that during midnight when the channel is on, his body can phase into his television set, using the set as a gateway to another world infested with shadows. Mayonaka TV and the town murders seem so connected that it's possible that the victims may in fact victims of Mayonaka TV itself. The characters decide to solve the mysterious murders by exploring the hidden world of Mayonaka TV.
Brand-New Yet Familiar game play
Persona 4's game play and style are similar to the popular Persona 3. Players familiar with Persona 3 will quickly recognize the social links and dungeon crawling game play, as well as the engine itself. The battles also have some similarities, such as the One More system, All-out attack, and the AI controlled support characters.
However, unlike Persona 3, characters can be set to take commands from the player, new glasses allow characters to see through the heavy mist inside Mayonaka TV, and tarot cards can be shattered to summon the characters' respective Persona. Other changes include an increase in player stats from three to five, and the removal of health status, allowing players to explore dungeons continuously.
Let the Action Begin
Battle-wise, Persona 4 lets you directly control the actions of other party members and continually exploit an enemy's weakness. Post-battle card shuffles have added Arcana Chance, which bring you good or bad status depending on the Arcana. Battles now occur after school instead of at midnight, like in Persona 3, giving the player less time in which to do social activities. This turns out to be significant because Social Links now have a greater effect on battle.
At higher levels, the player's allies progress from occasionally protecting the protagonist from a deathblow, through occasionally offering follow-up attacks, to eventually allow the persona of the corresponding ally to evolve into another persona. And persona can retain or even lose weaknesses and can be immune to certain kind of magic attacks. All allies who have their corresponding Social Link levels maxed out now have a chance to survive an otherwise fatal attack, leaving them with one remaining HP.

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner

Publisher: Konami Corporation
Platform: PlayStation 2
Genre: Shooter
Rated: Mature
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (67 votes)
Release: Mar 2003
Summary: When the name Hideo Kojima comes to mind, most people think of Metal Gear or Solid Snake. Without a doubt, they are his greatest creations. But he has another that most don't know about, the series called Zone Of The Enders. The latest and greatest addition to the series is called Zone Of The Enders: The Second Runner. It's, in my opinion, one of the best games ever made. It's also not a very popular game for some reason, which is a shame.

This has got to be one of the fastest games I've ever played in my life, and one of the most fun! Mechs move like we always knew they could, fast and furiously. And the enemies vastly outnumber you. You will literally, at times, face what looks to be hundreds of enemies. But don't be afraid, your mech is much nimbler and stronger than anything the enemy throws at you. And if you're fast enough, you'll have no trouble destroying the enemy before they can even touch you. Now I'm not saying that this game is easy, because it's not. It can be very, very challenging and will always leave you wanting to come back for more. The bosses are particularly challenging. Once you think that you have a boss' pattern down, they'll throw a new, even deadlier attack at you. But I found no parts of the game to be so frustrating that I'd do something like throw my controller at the wall. The fighting can get slightly repetitive with regular enemies, but is always fun to do. The environments are destructible, and you can even pick up some of it to smash your enemies to little robot pieces with it. You can also grab your enemies and use them as a shield or throw them at others. And best of all, no bad camera angles! You control the camera with the right analog stick.

As soon as you see this game in action you'll notice the similarities graphic wise between it and MGS2. That is not a bad thing, this game is beautiful! Honestly, some of the best graphics I've ever seen on the PS2. It blends traditional graphics with cel-shaded graphics, and it works wonders on the eyes. Every explosion is a joy to behold and the mechs are just downright gorgeous with their "vein-like" look. The environments are a little bland and repetitive, but it's no big deal really. There can be a few slow downs also, but nothing to major. The anime cutscenes are well animated and are also a very nice touch to the game because it's an anime-like story. Even if you're not into that kind of thing, you'll enjoy them.

As always, Hideo's games have a wonderful soundtrack. From the techno beat theme song(which is just wow) to the slightest explosion from destroying something, you won't believe your ears. The stage music isn't all that great but the boss music is awesome. The voice acting is pretty good as well. The only problem is that because it's from Japan, the mouths don't always match up with the dialogue. But, from what I've seen, the voices seem to actually only be about half a second off. So maybe something got screwed up in recording. And in the cockpit, the mouths move very fast for some reason. Either way, it's nothing that'll bother you much.

You can probably complete the main game in about 10 hours or so. You'll probably want to play through it a few times though because it's just plain fun. Oh yea, and for the extras. And from what I've heard, there are a ton of them. However, I've only played through the main game once so I haven't unlocked much. I have however played multiplayer with a friend or two and it was pretty fun. It had us for almost a whole day, and we'll probably play it again many times to come. Most people will say differently about the multiplayer though.

If you like mechs, you will like this game. If you like fast combat, you will like this game. If you like fast mech combat, you will absolutely love this game. This game is a blast to play and the hours that you get from it may be the best video game hours of your life. I, for one, believe this is one of the most underrated games ever and not enough people have played it. Even if you aren't a Hideo Kojima fan and/or didn't like Metal Gear Solid, you may still love this game because it's not like anything else out there. The ultimate question is to either rent or buy however. All I can say is if you liked what you heard in my review, then buy it. If you didn't, I say at least give it a rent. That is, if you can even find it. This is a gaming experience that no one should miss out on.

Rating: 4.5 (1466 votes)

Summary: "Final Fantasy X" is the first title in this landmark RPG series to be released for the PlayStation2. The main characters are Tidus, a star of blitzball (a hugely popular sport in the Final Fantasy universe), and Yuna, who has learned the art of summoning and controlling aeons, powerful spirits of yore. These two people of different backgrounds must work together as they journey through the world of Spira. This installment of Final Fantasy has a distinctly Asian influence, bringing a fresh feel to the characters, music, settings, and story.
Features include voice-overs for the first time in the series (utilizing the Facial Motion System), high-polygon, motion-captured player characters designed by Tetsuya Nomura, and a camera that automatically adjusts its perspective to correspond with the movements of the characters--a feature now possible because the game is largely polygonal.

Final Fantasy XII Collector's Edition

Publisher: Square Enix
Platform: PlayStation 2
Genre: Role-Playing (RPG)
Rated: Teen
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (6 votes)
Summary: Final Fantasy XII is spectacular. Adapting a form of live action gameplay first introduced in XI, FFXII still stays true to its turn based roots but with time factors, as seen initially in FFVII. The graphics are incredible and the gameplay is a lot of fun. The story is also incredibly in depth, and is jam packed with sidequests.

As far as the fighting engine, it initially seems rather lackluster, mostly because all you can do is attack. However, as the game goes on and you learn new technics, magics, summons, and mist abilities (similiar to VII's "limit breaks"), the battles become downright exciting. This is significant because it makes leveling up a less tedious, and often a fun process.

The only downside, as is the case with all modern FF's, is the voiceovers. The actors, as always, are pretty bad, but the storyline is so interesting, that it makes up for the poor performances pretty well.

The Collector's Edition is worth the extra few bucks for the flashy metal case alone, but the bonus features disk is also jampacked with art and other special features that any fanboy would be insane to pass up. And at it's $40-50 asking price, you're getting a minimum of 80 hours of gameplay, and a few extra hours of special features. It's a great deal. Go for it.
