This issue marks the return of the "Marvel" version of Jabba. Quite possibly, the story was ordered up by LucasFilm in order to "explain away" the Jabba from issue #1. It's equally possible that Marvel took the initiative themselves, knowing they had sort of "faked" Jabba before, and now suspected they eventually were going to have a problem on their hands if Lucas ever did show Jabba in a film.
Either way, one of the key points of this story was to demonstrate that Jabba the Hut was not Jabba the Hutt. And until the release of Return of the Jedi it was a nifty little retcon. From the viewpoint of the 21st century, though, this explanation is far from satisfactory, and indeed reads worse than just saying (of the A New Hope adaptation), "we didn't know what Jabba was going to look like". In fact, this story is now simply a continuity mess that is best considered Infinities. It has, in the language of Star Wars fandom, been eclipsed by a G-level source. |
