Barry Manilow - Greatest Hits, Vol. 1

Artist: Barry Manilow
Genre: Pop
Label: Arista
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (26 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: This is the best collection of the 3 volumes in my opnion: "Mandy", "Looks Like We Made It", and "Can't Smile Without You" are classics! However, if you buy this, then you MUST buy the volumes 2 & 3 to get his other essential songs.
Before "Ultimate Manilow" was available, this was the best collection to have. It's ok if you buy this, but the packaging is not too good: no notes, no pictures, just song credits.

Behavior [CASSETTE]

Artist: Pet Shop Boys
Genre: Dance & Electronic
Label: Capitol
My Rating:
Rating: 5.0 (9 votes)
Summary: "Behaviour" marks a bit of a departure--or, more appropriately, an evolution--in style for the Pet Shop Boys, whose previous albums are largely comprised of hungry and often slightly seedy songs with a high emphasis production-wise on the band's beloved club roots. Those dance elements are still on display here, but there's a much more mature feel to Harold Faltermeyer's production.
The songs themselves have moved on from neediness and seediness to far more adult themes; opening tracks "Being Boring" and "This Must Be the Place I Waited Years To Leave", with their lyrics of reminiscence, fond and otherwise, set the tone for the next 50 minutes. There are gently melodic songs of betrayal-"To Face The Truth", "Only The Wind"--and more upbeat variations on the same theme in "So Hard" and the string-laden "Jealousy" and a touching tale of first attraction in "Nervously". The album's only real downer comes in the pompous shape of "My October Symphony", a wincingly pretentious thing which suggests the band have fallen prey to the kind of po-faced muso nonsense they poke fun at in "How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously".
"Behaviour" is possibly the best album for fans of Neil and Chris' more circumspect outpourings; what it lacks in upbeat anthems and disco production it more than makes up for in intelligent, introspective song writing. And with a bonus CD of 12 remixes and B-sides, it's a must-have for anyone who likes their pop meticulously crafted and shrewdly lyrical. --"Rikki Price"

Belinda Carlisle - Her Greatest Hits

Artist: Belinda Carlisle
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: MCA
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (38 votes)
Release: 1992
Summary: Belinda Carlisle's greatest hits from her four I.R.S. and MCA solo albums just showed her growth. Most of the attention has been on major hits Heaven Is A Place on Earth and Mad About You, but my true favorite from her is Circle in The Sand, which is on here. I still love that song any time it plays in a store or if I play it on a stereo. Imagine yourself on a beach when you hear that song instead of just straight up listening to it. It has such an airy landscape for a pop song, and I like the acoustic guitar playing on it as well as the sound effects of water splashing on the beach. I remembered hearing it a lot between April and June of 1988. This made me accept Belinda more as an artist and more than just being in the Go-Go's. Carlisle matured a lot on the '87 album and just got better on the next couple of albums. While her later stuff hasn't created the buzz as her first efforts, this is a good collection of Belinda's best records.

The Best of Berlin 1979-1988

Artist: Berlin
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Geffen Records
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (34 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: Like Blondie, Berlin is a female-fronted new wave band with a lead singer (Terri Nunn) who can really belt, although Nunn is more in-your-face than Debbie Harry. Their music is submerged new wave synth-pop that is varied most successfully by Nunn's agile vocal arrangements. In "No More Words," she first yells and then drops to a scathing whisper, only to attack again; it's scary enough to make any man cower. "Take My Breath Away" is a beautiful from-the-gut ballad, so large and deep in scope that it commands your full attention. In "The Metro" she puts you on a train, sullen and melancholy, going nowhere. "--Beth Bessmer"

The Best of Blondie

Artist: Blondie
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Capitol
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (74 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: While "Best Of" may not be inclusive enough for the avid collector because it focuses more on Blondie's new wave dance hits than on their punk beginnings, songs like "Heart of Glass," "Dreaming," "The Tide Is High," and "Call Me" display the diverse musical styles this band embraced. It's a new wave album, a reggae album, a dance album, a punk album, and a rap album. Rock-solid songwriting and Debbie Harry's sultry vocals hold the CD together despite the stylistic reaches of the tracks. "--Beth Bessmer"

The Best of New Order

Artist: New Order
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Qwest / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (57 votes)
Release: 1995
Summary: Manchester's pivotal post-punk quartet offer a 16-track opus that skips obscurities and early material in favor of their greatest singles. Highlights include "Blue Monday," "Thieves Like Us" and "The Perfect Kiss" and sparkling Stephen Hague remixes of "True Faith" and "Bizarre Love Triangle." "--Jeff Bateman"

Big Tyme

Artist: Heavy D & The Boyz
Genre: R&B
Label: Mca
My Rating:
Rating: 5.0 (10 votes)
Release: 1989
Summary: I've been fortunate to have kept up with "The Overweight Lover" all these years but undoubtedly this CD stands out as not only his best, but a classic five mic album. This is when rap was fun and it wasn't all about nonsense beefs (see Game/50 cent, Nas/Jay-Z, Lil Kim/Foxy Brown), this was a time where if you couldn't rap, or you couldn't freestyle and step up to the plate when called out, you're career is done. Not like today where mushmouth rappers (50 cent & G-Unit, Fabulous, MA$E, and all the rest of those mushmouth, winey rappers we have today)can live large off one CD. Back then when it came to lyrics, Heavy D was right there in talent with the Big Daddy Kane's, KRS-One's, Chuck D's, Kool G. Rap's, D.O.C.'s, Ice Cube's, Biz Markie's, LL Cool J's, Kool Moe Dee's, Run DMC's of the worlds where skills actually made or broke your career, not crossover radio play. Where back then, it was frowned upon by other rap artists and fans alike for an artist to strictly make records to cross over. However with Heavy D, not only was he lyrically gifted, and had bangin tracks that radio just couldn't ignore to party to, but was one of the first rappers to incorporate reggae lyrics (him being of Jamaican descent) into his songs (Check out "Mood For Love"). While Run DMC shattered the charts with "My Adidas", Heavy was shattering the streets with "NIKE" just when the ORIGINAL Air Force One's was coming into their own. There's not a bad cut on this LP at all and Gyrlz They Love Me, is probably the banginest track on here.

Just to add one more piece to the Heavster's legacy, I can never think of one rap artist that ever had a foul thing or a bad thing or diss to say about Heavy D. Which is extremely rare in today's so-called rap climate. That goes to show not only the respect this man garnered from his peers, but he also gave that same respect back. This is what hip-hop was supposed to be about, being original, being skillful with the raps, and staying true to you without having to sellout.

Black Celebration [CASSETTE]

Artist: Depeche Mode
Genre: Reggae
Label: Sire
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (15 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: Depeche Mode's most foreboding album, leaning toward the gothic, is DM at their most bleak, black-armband and nihilistic--no doubt played over and over by countless self-loathing teens as they dyed their hair black behind locked bedroom doors. The tracks are tastefully minimalist, yet the few sounds that dominate each song have a consuming, even overwhelming feel--like a big, heavy black cloud that descends upon and surrounds listeners until their knees buckle from the weight. Rhythmically, songs like "A Question of Time" are driven with moderately paced 16th notes pounded out on synths filling out the low end. Other tracks follow the path of "Stripped", an all-out lamentfest powered by David Gahan's overproduced baritone. -- "Beth Bessmer"

Body Language

Artist: Ana
Genre: R&B
Label: Sony
My Rating:
Rating: 5.0 (2 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: Wow.

Not many people know of the existence of this flop album from 1990. Now, almost two decades after its' release, its almost impossible to find, and used copies go for hundreds of dollars on Ebay (if you're lucky).

Why is this so good?

Reason No. 1 : Jordan Knight. Ana, then virtually unknown (though VERY well known to readers of "Teen Beat") released a single with him called "Angel of Love" (a very 80s sounding synthetic ballad, but it works). This could be called the highlight of the album, but to me it was amongst the more generic of the songs here.

Reason No. 2 : Debbie Gibson. I had this magazine in 1990 that chronicled Debbie and Ana working together in the studio for a song called "Everytime we say Goodbye". When I got this album on cassette, I made it a point to hear this song first. This could have been a track from Debster's "Electric Youth" album - its just that good - and Ana's amazing voice only takes it to the next level. Simply wonderful.

Reason No. 3 : The last track - "Friendly" - this has GOT to be the most UNDERRATED track from the soundscape of 1990s female songstresses. It really is that good. Listen, and hum.

Well lets face it - not many people are ever going to own this album. I have a copy and I treasure it, because I remember the time when I was in my early teens and when pop music by Paula Abdul, NKOTB and Tiffany were clean, wholesome entertainment. This is a fantastic slice of that era, and I urge you to source out a copy from somewhere.

Bringing Down the Horse

Artist: The Wallflowers
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Interscope Records
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (137 votes)
Release: 1996
Summary: When people talk about Jakob Dylan these days, they're less likely to refer to his famous father than to his band, the Wallflowers, and their breakthrough album, "Bringing Down the Horse". Not only a staggering commercial success, the disc is also a superb example of the folk-rock Jakob's daddy helped pioneer more than 30 years ago. The Wallflowers don't need family relations to command respect.
When the Wallflowers recorded their self-titled album in 1992, most of the band's members were 22 and weren't ready for prime time yet. The songs had flashes of inspiration and promise but didn't really hang together. It took four years for the Wallflowers to release a second album, but this time they were ready. The folk-rock melodies were strong; the playing was clear and muscular, and the production by T-Bone Burnett (friend of the family) framed the lyrics' storytelling imaginatively. Jakob will never escape comparisons to his dad, but his new music can stand on its own as some of the decade's best.
In fact, Jakob's voice doesn't resemble his father's so much as Tom Petty's nasal drawl, and the way Wallflower Rami Jaffee soaks nearly every song in Benmont Tench-like B-3 organ makes the Heartbreaker connection unmistakable. Fortunately, Jakob's evocative songwriting and the Wallflowers' high-energy playing reminds one of the early Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers records rather than the desultory, later work. Heartbreaker Mike Campbell even plays on "6th Avenue Heartache," the first single and a gloriously harmonized lament for the victims of America's meanest streets. "The same white line that was drawn on you," Jakob sings, "was drawn on me." He takes a more defiant, more rocking approach later in the album when he proclaims he's "Laughing Out Loud" in the face of everyone who ever tried to push him around. "--Geoffrey Himes"
