Patty Smyth

Artist: Patty Smyth
Genre: Pop
Label: Mca Special Products
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (6 votes)
Release: 2003
Summary: Smyth delivered a long-awaited comeback knockout with this collection of rockers and pop gems. "I should be laughing" and "No mistakes" are highlights as is the hit duet w/Don Henley "Sometimes love just ain't enough". A great release from an artist who's material is hard to come by.

Peace & Love, Inc.

Artist: Information Society
Genre: Dance & DJ
Label: Warner Bros / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (17 votes)
Release: 1992
Summary: I was all about IS back in the late 80's early 90's. I loved them and had their debut album (still my fav), HACK and Peace & Love, INC. I couldn't wait for them to release P&LI. When I got it home and played through all the tracks, track 12 pierced my ears. But looking at the name of the song, 300bps N, 8, 1 (Terminal Mode Or Ascii Download), I knew that was modem settings. I called my uncle, whom at the time worked for IBM, and told him the track sounded like modem tones. I met him at his house and played track 12 for him and he agreed and proceeded to connect it to his IBM AT PC and played it while connected to his printer. What happened next was totally ahead of it's time and 'til this day still unique. Pages flowed from the printer and I couldn't wait to read it. When it stopped, my uncle and I sat there and read through a story of how the band was in south america and the tour bus got stuck in the mud on a dirt road. It has been 15 or so years so that's all I can remember but it was a fun read. I printed it out tried to lug it with me over the years but no longer can find it. If anyone reading this has a soft copy, I'd love to see it again. Might have to dig up my CD and see if I am savy enough to do it on my own this time.

Also, their debut CD was a CD+G. The G stood for graphics and I always wanted to see what was on the CD. A couple of years go I found a CD-G player on the web (google it) and it allowed you to use your PC CD-Rom as a CD+G player. It was an evaluation copy so I only got to see a few seconds of each track. It was basically home made animated videos for each song, telling how each track was made, what equipment was used in making the songs. Again, very cool for 1988. I still don't think anyone else has done that.

Information Society was a very unique band, be it music, videos, dress or technology used.

I miss them.

Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em

Artist: MC Hammer
Genre: Dance & DJ
Label: Capitol
My Rating:
Rating: 3.5 (31 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: In hip-hop, respect is like currency, and by the mid-'90s MC Hammer was as bereft of props as he was of cash. But there was a short period in the early '90s when every clock in the land read "Hammer time," and truth be told, he was the artist who introduced a lot of kids to hip-hop and its many possibilities. The driving force behind "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em", of course, is the irrepressible single "U Can't Touch This," built on the central riff from Rick James's immortal "Super Freak." Hammer also scored with album cuts "Here Comes the Hammer," "Have You Seen Her," and "Pray," but after that, it was a short trip from Benzes to VH1's "Behind the Music". "--Daniel Durchholz"

Plus

Artist: Ed Sheeran
Genre: Pop
Label: Warner Bros UK
My Rating:
Release: 2011
Summary: Deluxe edition includes four additional tracks; 'Autumn Leaves,' 'Little Bird,' 'Gold Rush' and 'Sunburn'. 2011 debut album from the British singer/songwriter. The album features the Top 3 hit 'The A Team' which has already sold over 380,000 copies - making it the highest charting and biggest selling UK debut all year. 'The A Team' still resides firmly in the UK Top 5 some eight weeks post release. + also features the oncoming smash 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You'. Ed Sheeran's + is timeless songwriting informed as much by Jay-Z and Eminem as by Bob Dylan and Damien Rice. The flame-haired 20-year-old's lyrics talk about the city he loves and the people in it, the people made by it, and those damaged by it. Asylum.

Poison

Artist: Bell Biv DeVoe
Genre: Dance & DJ
Label: Mca
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (36 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: In 1990, it was still fairly novel to mix R&B songcraft with overpowering hip-hop beats, so this spinoff by New Edition members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe seemed innovative and exciting. Sadly it hasn't aged well. None of the three are compelling singers, and they lack the ability to plead for love effectively (anyone can demand love, but a true soulman has to convince a reluctant participant). Nor are they imaginative rappers--neither their words nor their delivery stand out. But this disc came before the likes of Missy Elliott, Puff Daddy, Jermaine Dupri, or Dallas Austin made a big impact on the scene. As such it's a fine document of black teenage lust during the Gulf War months. "--Martin Johnson"

POP! - the first 20 hits

Artist: Erasure
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Reprise / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (57 votes)
Release: 1992
Summary: A singles band if ever there was one, the hits on "Pop" make the duo of Andy Bell and Vince Clarke of Erasure sound like the Rodgers & Hammerstein of synth-pop disco. With the exception of "The Circus" and "The Innocents" albums, most of Erasure's full lengths house only a few brief moments of brilliance, the rest of the songs being limp and uninspired. But putting songs like "Blue Savannah" with its sweeping loveliness, the haunting "Ship of Fools," and the campy, raucous "Love to Hate You" all on the same disc shows that when Erasure is on, they shine like a thousand-carat tiara. The energetic and electronic disco is front and center here with "Oh L'Amour" and the audience participation number "Stop!," but the beautifully crafted "Sometimes" shows the band's true potential. The irrepressible melody line is punctuated by an acoustic riff and a melancholy trumpet solo that actually has to do its best to keep up with Bell's warm lament. An indispensable collection. --"Steve Gdula"

Promises and Lies

Artist: UB40
Genre: International
Label: Virgin Records Us
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (7 votes)
Release: 1993
Summary: It's no coincidence that UB40's biggest hits and most pleasurable songs have been their reggae-rock remakes of other acts' songs--Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine," Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe," the Chi- Lites' "Homely Girl," Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," and so on. Only 1 of the 11 numbers on "Promises and Lies" is a cover tune, but the band's remake of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" is a real treat. Featured in the film "Sliver", the ballad gets a new momentum from UB40's horns and rhythm section and finds its obsessive quality reinforced by the reggae-dub echoes. The album also includes "Reggae Music," a delightful dancehall workout which neatly balances Astro's reggae toasting against Ali and Robin Campbell's sweetly sung pop-soul hook. Unfortunately, the other 9 songs are full of steady grooves and admirable sentiments but little in the way of melody or fresh ideas that might separate them from hundreds of similar reggae exercises. "--Geoffrey Himes"
