Lea Salonga

Artist: Lea Salonga
Genre: Soundtrack
Label: Atlantic / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (103 votes)
Release: 1993
Summary: Lea Salonga is a perfect singer - she's got one of the best voices this world has ever heard, therefore she became one of the best loved and admired musical stage performers (leading parts in Miss Saigon, Flower Drum Song or unforgettable Les Miserables Anniversary Concert). Just hear Lea's rendition of "On My Own" and die. Such is the power of the gift she's got from God. But is her power always used for the right purposes? Not always. And this pop album proves that. Of course Lea's voice shines as usual, however the mediocre pop songs don't work for her. If only someone had given Lea better material...Not that the tracks are unlistenable, they're just "nice" and Lea deserves something much bigger, something spectacular. Listening to this album, you may find yourself asking: "What's that beautiful voice doing here?". Most of the stuff is like I've-heard-it-all-before...

Okay, now some good news! The album has a few highlights and they are: "Vision Of You" - great song, very memorable and sensual; "We Could Be In Love" - superb duet with Brad Kane, the song is rather humble but really heart-warming and honest; "The Journey" - the final track on the album, and definitely the best one, it's just wonderful, dreamy, nostalgic yet uplifting - the one you'd like to hear closing the important chapter in your life - this song is the best reason to get the album!

Summing up, Lea's self-titled cd is an OK album; nothing revolutionary but pretty satisfying to a pop music fan. Personally, I prefer the musical style of Lea's music; her concert albums are like heaven for the ears - live singing truly showcases her fenomenal talent! I believe (and dream) that Lea will record an album really worth her Voice, "the World's 8th Wonder". You go, Lea!

I mean, how can you resist 3 japanese girls kicking major rock butt? I wish more of the popular US musical organizations (I hesitate to call them bands any more) had this much energy and originality.

Leveler

Artist: August Burns Red
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Solid State Records
My Rating:
Release: 2011
Summary: 2011 release from the Christian Metalcore band. When it came time to record their fourth full length album, ABR could have played it safe, could have simply cashed in on their previous success by making Constellations II. Instead, after eight years and a quarter of a million albums sold, August Burns Red scrapped the old game plan and followed their sound where it led them. The direction, as it turns out, was both forward and backward. On Leveler, the band recaptured the hungry, ferocious heaviness of their earlier albums, and at the same time bravely indulged some of the more creative impulses they had previously stifled. The breathtaking result is nothing short of a game-changer.

Liberator

Artist: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Virgin Records Us
My Rating:
Rating: 3.5 (14 votes)
Release: 1993
Summary: "Liberator" by OMD might sound a little bit off for early day OMD fans, but we have to agree that some songs here are a grade A pop tunes. Songs like "Christine", "Only tears" are very addictive, well anyway try and listen to this CD two or three times and you'll see how it'll grow on you.

Lovely

Artist: Jocelyn Enriquez
Genre: Dance & DJ
Label: Classified Records
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (2 votes)
Release: 1994
Summary: I found this CD the other day used at an FYE, and decided to experiment with Jocelyn's older material. I honestly didn't know this CD existed, but I'm glad I found it. The faster songs on the CD show the evolution from classic freestyle to the new school sounds that are pervasive today, and were probably revolutionary in '94 when the album was released. "Make This Last Forever" starts out slow, then explodes into a hot dance track. Jocelyn's vocals totally work with the music and convince you that she wants the relationship to last. My favorite song is "I've Been Thinking About You", which I was introduced to in the Freestyle's Greatest Beats compilation (volume 10 I believe). The electro-funk elements melt into the freestyle elements with ease, creating a smoothly delivered cut that offers a variety of vocals and beats. "Big Love" is a darker dance track, something that would be perfect in the middle of an extended DJ set. "Only" is a powerful ballad sung over a happy melody, sure to bring a smile to anyone who listens. I recommend this CD for the fast songs. The slower songs offer some good vocals and subject matter, but if you prefer the upbeat, danceable cuts Jocelyn has to offer, give this CD a try. It's a treat, and a fun history lesson.
