Sailor Moon: Songs From The Hit TV Series

Artist: Various
Duration: 29:10
Genre: Soundtracks
Label: Rhino / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (188 votes)
Release: 1996
Summary: Fans of this superheroine fantasy-adventure TV cartoon series will enjoy these 10 songs from the American soundtrack. The mambolike "Sailor Moon Theme" is a favorite. Most of the rest of the songs are Sailor Moon's (Jennifer Cihi) and are bouncy, upbeat solos expressing the exuberance of youth ("It's a New Day," "I Wanna Be a Star!"), the loyalty of friendship ("Call My Name," "Carry On"), and young love ("My Only Love"). Two of the best, the sweetly hopeful "Oh Starry Night" and the slightly syncopated "Rainy Day Man," also about young love, are by other vocalists. The pulsing "She's Got the Power" is good, but alas, too generically superheroish. It lacks the personal identification with the individual Sailor Scouts that the others have. "--Fred Patten"

Sharon Apple - The Cream P.U.F

Artist: Yoko Kanno
Duration: 26:12
Genre: Anime
Label: Victor Entertainment
My Rating:
Release: 1995
Comments: YEAR: 1995

Summary: The year is 2040 and the galaxy is flourishing with several colonies and advanced technology. AI is near perfection and the current top idol is the near-completed Virturoid Idol Sharon Apple. All that is missing are her actual feelings, which instead are supplied by Myung Fang Lone. Sharon's debut concert is on planet Eden, where at the same time, fighter pilots Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman battle over air superiority for the "Supernova Project." Isamu, Guld and Myung were once childhood friends, but after an accident seven years ago, they went their own separate ways. With Myung back in the picture, the old disputes are once again awakened. And when an unstable and illegal AI technique is installed in Sharon, the situation is worsened.

Smile

Artist: L'Arc-En-Ciel
Duration: 48:32
Genre: JRock
Label: Tofu Records
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (48 votes)
Release: 2004
Summary: Some people may call this CD overrated simply because the second track is the opening to the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist, but there are many other songs on here that surpass "Ready Steady Go" and make this CD worth its money.

"Kuchizuke", for example, starts off the CD with Hyde's lower, grittier voice (attributed to his smoking habit) and sets the bar in terms of variety - whether it be vocals, guitar, or subject matter. Another favorite of mine is track eight, "Revelation", which immediately attracted my attention when I first listened to this CD because of the introduction (strong guitar chords followed by an underlying techno-ish beat). About half of the songs are more rock, and there are also rock ballads, such as Hitomi no Jyunin (Living in Your Eyes). There are even a couple of songs that sound, for lack of a better word, peppy. "Ready Steady Go" is one, with bright guitar chords and a catchy beat, and "Feeling Fine" is another.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this CD and it's already become one of my favorites. Even the inside cover made me smile - pictures of the band wearing boxes on their heads with the trademark "smile" on the front cover. Smile is a must-have for any Laruku fan.

SPEED Single Collection

Artist: SPEED

Genre: Jpop

My Rating:
Comments: HK Bootleg
Picture does not represent cover

Summary: SPEED are Hiroko Shimabukuro, Eriko Imai, Takako Uehara, and Hitoe Arakaki.
They came from Okinawan Actors School (OAS) where other famous Japanese singers, such as Amuro Namie, MAX, Da Pump, Chinen Rina, etc. came from. They made their break when they were invited, around November 1995, when they were selected from an audition by RISE Productions to appear regularly as backup vocalists and dancers on a local Saturday night show called "THE Your mo HIPPARE". From there on, they took off in a brand new career.

At that time, they even haven't got an official name for their group. Then on December 2, 1995 they officially use the name "SPEED".
(The name SPEED was selected from a nationwide survey that was broadcast on TV. It was Eriko and Takako who eventually decided on the name SPEED!) SPEED is a great name indeed, for this band has made it to the top quickly. As a newcomer in the Japan music industry they realized that it needs hardwork if they want to survive. They choose pop music mixed with hip-hop (at that time in Japan, hip-hop was not the trend). But they kept trying and trying.

Starting Over

Artist: SPEED
Duration: 51:59
Genre: JPop
Label: Toy Factory
My Rating:
Release: 1997
Comments: YEAR: 1997

Summary: When the group formed in 1996 the youngest member of the group Hiroko was only 12 years of age. Unlike most artists from the OAS which were signed to the Avex record label, Speed was instead snatched up by Toys Factory. Their sole producer during their time together was Hiromasa Ijichi. Upon forming, Speed recorded a few songs, however Body & Soul was quickly chosen to be their debut single. The video for the song was filmed on location in San Francisco and Los Angeles and sold an impressive total of 638,000+ copies upon its release (Body & Soul was also Speed's longest chart song, lingering in the charts for well over a year). Body & Soul was quickly followed up by the ballad single Steady. Probably due to the fact that the song was endorsed by a popular dorama at the time, Steady sold and impressive 1.27 million copies. Following Steady the girls decided to go with a more upbeat song and released the single 'Go Go Heaven'. The video for the song was filmed on location in New York and Miami. The song sold over 665,000 copies and became the girls first number one single. Following Go Go Heaven, Speed released their debut album Starting Over. The album contained a mix of upbeat songs mixed with soft ballads. When the album was released it entered the Oricon charts at number 1 and sold over 2.5 million copies.

After the release of Starting Over, Speed followed on with their upbeat genre and released the single 'Wake Me Up!'. The video for the song was filmed on location in the Philippines and sold approximately 671,000 copies (total shipment: 890,000) when it was released. It was also during this time that Speed decided to have their debut concert. The concert titled 'Speed - First Live' was staged outdoors on location in Odaiba and featured an impressive stage with pyrotechnics and acrobatic stunts.

SWEET 19 BLUES

Artist: Namie Amuro
Genre: Jpop
Label: エイベックス・マーケティング・コミュニケーションズ
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (9 votes)
Release: 1996
